I've been thinking of setting up a Dreamwidth journal since a lot of Tolkien fans seem to be over there too. Folks who are on Dreamwidth, or aren't, but know a little about it, would you recommend making an account? What are the main differences between it and LJ? If you're on Dreamwidth, what's the reason? :-) Thanks in advance for the advice guys.

I'm on Dreamwidth, and import my LJ posts & comments there a couple of times a month, solely as a back-up in case LJ crashes temporarily, or something dire happens to it. I can only handle one journal at a time, so LJ is still my home. Since I only have a free account there, I'm limited in the number of icons, and also can't post polls, which I love to do here.

I see - so it works as a good place for a back-up? Fair enough re: the icons and the polls. Thanks for replying!

I have a Dreamwidth account (under the username zdenka), but I don't post anything there or keep track of posts. I recently started using it as a private backup of my LJ. I sometimes find it convenient to have one when there are fandom events running on DW and not LJ, or if someone is cross-posting on both platforms and I want to take part in the conversation on the DW side. Basically, I use it only for commenting.

In my experience, there aren't major differences -- some of the coding is a little different if you like to post in HTML, and DW has a larger maximum size for entries. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

I see! So there are some fandom events that are only on DW? Good to konw there's not many different functional differences. Thanks for replying :-)

My Dreamwidth account is simply a backup for my LJ.

Aha, gotcha - that seems to be how it is for most, judging by the other responses. Thanks for replying :-)

There are a number of good exchanges and communities that are run on DW.
Also, it's been set up to be easy to back up LJ from DW (by uploading the whole journal from LJ) and vice versa (by cross-posting entries).
I have quite few people on my f-list who are on DW and don't set up their journal entries to cross-post to LJ, but there are some.
(You can access DW by logging in with OpenID, but of course that option limits you a bit.)

Aha! See, it's the communities or DW-specific fandom events, as well as the backing up, that's got me interested. I might end up giving it a go. Thanks for the reply :-)

Fandom Stocking runs on there. Also Gen Prompt Bingo (not sure whether I've got the name quite right). And Innumerable Stars.
