This is for both the SWG March 2017 Strength & Beauty Challenge, and for Day 1 of Fëanorian Week: Maedhros.

The prompt for the former was:

"Real strength never impairs beauty or harmony, but it often bestows it; and in everything imposingly beautiful, strength has much to do with the magic."

~Herman Melville, Moby Dick

And the prompt for the latter was: Adjusting/Coping and Beauty.

I ended up making some artwork of Maedhros, recovered post-Thangorodrim, and wrote a little drabble to accompany it, as kind of a prologue to the picture. I'll be honest that this is my first foray into fanworks for any of the Fëanorians - I've never drawn or written Maedhros before (or Fingon for that matter, who also appears), and I'm still kind of feeling my way through the characters and their relationship (because I totally ship them).

Molten Copper
Rating: Gen
Genre: Gen/Character Study
Warnings: None
Characters: Maedhros, Fingon
Relationships: Basically Maedhros/Fingon

Alone in the sparring field, he clings to Fingon’s words from the morning.

“It’s like molten copper in this light,” he’d murmured, braiding Maedhros’ hair. “Even after everything - the fire inside you melts it down like you’re a forge.”

“It’s nothing special.”

“It’s the most beautiful thing in the world. Always has been. Like a sword glinting at sunrise.”

He’s glad Fingon says what he thinks.

Maedhros works to unlearn the lie taught him by torment - that strength is the province of ugly, disempowering monsters. He gets better; fights with a left hand more deadly than his right ever was.
I tried to use Persian armour to inspire the art, not sure how it turned out. One day when I'm not being quietly assassinated by pursuing a tertiary education, I'll make a more detailed version :-)

I love the Persian armour idea. It works really well. We are very accustomed to looking at late-Medieval Western European armour in the fantasy genre, which doesn't work that well in the context of the exiled Noldor. For me it needs to look somewhat Other--instead of instantly relatable to the common denominator high-fantasy motif!

Thank you so much! I definitely find it already difficult to reconcile the idea that Elves and Men will have similar armour styles (Medieval Western European inspired, as per the genre trope), simply because of that element of Other - but particularly with the exiled Noldor as you mention, it needs an even clearer distinction! It just cannot be equated in my mind - they are different, there is a certain 'exoticism', if that word can be used, that separates the expression of their culture in their clothing, their armour, their weapons etc. from others.

Thanks again, I'm glad you liked it!

Ooh. *happy sigh*

Please keep writing and drawing them. :D

This is lovely, both the artwork and the drabble. I love this in particular:

that strength is the province of ugly, disempowering monsters

I like to imagine the entire Noldorin quest in these terms, of strength and beauty against ugliness and ruin. (I particularly like to imagine Maedhros in that strength and beauty role. Thirteen years and he's still my heartthrob. ;)

I agree with Oshun: I like how you did the armor. I've never imagined heavy plate as particularly conducive to how I think the Eldar probably fought.

Hooray!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the drabble and the art :-) Indeed, I think that this was event was like a test - immersing him in the ruination that sought to claim his strength and by extension the purpose of the quest; and then pulling him out of it, to remember that his strength could not be claimed because he had something in him that was better than the darkness of his enemies. Flawed, but only as flawed as individuals often are; strength and beauty were still his. (Totally agree re: Maedhros the heartthrob btw ;) that feel never goes away)

I totally agree about the heavy plate armour - not only do I feel that it's not conducive to how their culture is differentiated in clothing and weapons to the culture of the Edain (as an example), but I definitely do not think it would have been conducive to their fighting style!

Thanks so much for commenting <3

I like the choice of armour, as well as the drabble accompanying the artwork.

I like the armour design- I also really like his expression. Maedhros is both strong and conflicted, and you caught that really well.

Thank you so very much!! He definitely had quite a war being waged inside him, but I like to think his strength carried him through it (until, of course it didn't in the end :( ).

Beautiful drabble and art.
I'm just getting to know these characters too.
That's a great start.

Thank you so much! Yes, I'm actually quite excited to get stuck into reading about them and understanding them. I know that for a lot of people in the fandom they're a cornerstone, and favourites, but I've always been more of a Doriathrim girl myself! Great to hear you're also beginning to explore them ^ ^

Thanks again <3
